Ottawa Architecture: Buildings in Hintonburg/Mechanicsville: A Historical Building Exhibit

Brief History of Hintonburg

Hintonburg was once a modest village on the western edge of Ottawa. Over the past century it has evolved into one of the city's most historically rich and diverse neighbourhoods. Named after Joseph Hinton, a local civic leader and landowner, the area was officially incorporated as a village in 1893 and annexed by the City of Ottawa in 1907. From its roots in lumber and railway industries, Hintonburg quickly became a working-class community filled with tradespeople, artisans, and small business owners. Its strategic location near rail lines and industrial corridors powered both residential and commercial growth throughout the early 20th century.
