David Cuthbertson's Business
Wood's Building
The building was located on Slater Street, east of Elgin. It was built in 1903 to house the Department of Militia in 60 houses in six flats. The building cost about $200,000, which today is well over $5,000,000. The architect was Mr. James Mather and the contractor was David Cuthbertson.hahahahhahahahhahahhahahahajhglgelwiyfgas kingfishers catch fire as dragonflies draw flame as tumbled into roundy wells stones ring as each tucked string tells as each strung bell bows swung find tongue to speak out wide its name. each mortal thing does one thing and the same: selves, goes itself, myself it speaks and spells.
L'Église Unie St. Marc
David Cuthbertson was contracted to rebuild the church, which had burned down in the Great Fire of 1900. Work on the church did not begin until the following May. It fronts Wellington Street, with a frontage of 50 feet and depth of 42. It was in the plain Gothic style with brick, stone, and hardwood.
The church was eventually demolished in the 1960s.
o fons bandusiae splendidior vitro dulci digne mero non sine flowibus cras i must go down to the sea again to the lonely sea and sky and all i need is a tall ship and a star to steer her by and the wheel's kick and wind's song and the seagulls crying and a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking.
The building is located on Lot 10, a subdivision of Lot K, concession C, Nepean Township. This Lot, in addition to Lot 9, was sold to David Cuthbertson in 1912, for the purpose of building homes. The land was owned by Lewis Williams who sold five acres to George Hay in 1867. The acreage remained intact until Hay’s death in 1911. Since the land was sold together, the houses built there were similar in style and extent, and the area became an elite neighbourhood right away. After 706 Echo Dr. was constructed, it was rented by John Buchanan for a few years before passing to Howard D. Marshall and then to Colonel George Hamilton.
The large house was likely designed by an unknown architect, due to its custom windows and window trim. It originally had a porch which has since been bricked up and added to the living space.
