Around the year 1870, at the same time he married his wife Margaret Christina Whillans, he moved to Ottawa. It is then that he volunteered as a soldier in the Fenian Raids. It is not clear when he began his business as a builder/contractor, but he was certainly engaged in that business by 1890.
